Job Description

The NATIONAL MUSEUM seeks an Exhibits Specialist (GS 9-11) to design and produce visual products for history museum exhibits at the Washington Navy Yard, DC location.

This role involves using design software to create exhibit layouts, brochures, and digital graphics while collaborating with museum professionals.

As an Exhibits Specialist, you will use Computer Aided Drafting and Design technology such as InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator to expedite changes in exhibit design and concept planning, ensuring alignment with the Americans with Disabilities Act and conservation guidelines.

You will specify the size and style of type for banners, titles, captions, and artifact placement used in specialized history museum exhibits.

Additionally, you will design the layout of graphic elements of complex history museum exhibits, as well as brochures, pamphlets, and other printed materials related to exhibitions and museum educational programs.

You will obtain estimates from vendors, ensure quality control of output, and collaborate with other museum professionals on the planning and creation of exhibits.

Qualification

To qualify at the GS-11 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-9, including independently planning and producing visual products for a museum, overseeing design of printed materials, collaborating on exhibit planning, and designing digital graphics. At the GS-9 level, you need one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-7, including planning visual products, designing printed materials, and assisting with exhibit planning. Education may substitute for experience: a master's degree or equivalent for GS-9, or a Ph.D. or equivalent for GS-11, in fields such as illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, or interior design.

  • GS-11: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-9, demonstrating: 1 independently planning and producing visual products for a museum; 2 overseeing design of brochures, pamphlets, educational materials; 3 consulting and collaborating with museum professionals on exhibits; 4 experience with printing graphics and preparing files for production; 5 overseeing design of digital graphics for.
  • GS-09: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-7, demonstrating: 1 planning and producing visual products; 2 designing layout of brochures, pamphlets, and printed materials; 3 consulting and collaborating with museum professionals to assist with exhibit planning.
  • Education substitution for GS-09: Master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education, or LL.B. or J.D. if related, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Education substitution for GS-11: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education, or LL.M. if related, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Major study must be in illustrative design, commercial art, fine arts, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, or related fields.
  • Advanced training in a vocational school, technical institute, or art institute above high school level is creditable as general experience on a month-for-month basis.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
Role Responsibilities

Use Computer Aided Drafting and Design technology (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) to expedite changes in exhibit design and concept planning in alignment with ADA and conservation guidelines.

  • Specify size and style of type for banners, titles, captions, and artifact placement in specialized history museum exhibits.
