Candidates must meet one of the following experience paths: two years of paid public safety dispatching within the past five years (including one year solo status).. Or five years of current paid work with a public safety or private EMS agency using CAD/radio/telephone.. Or completion of probation as a Public Safety Dispatcher I with Santa Clara. A POST Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Certificate can substitute for six months of solo experience.

  • Graduation from high school or GED.
  • Two years of paid public safety dispatching experience within the past five years, with at least one year solo status.
  • OR five years of current paid employment with a public safety agency or private EMS agency using CAD, radio, and/or telephone.
  • OR successful completion of probation as a Public Safety Dispatcher I with the City of Santa Clara.
  • Possession of a valid California POST Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Certificate and MPDS Certificate required before probation completion.
  • Must pass a City background investigation including fingerprinting, and may require polygraph and/or psychological testing.
  • Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job.
  • Federal law requires proof of work eligibility; City does not sponsor H1B or other visas.
Role Responsibilities

Dispatch police, fire, and emergency medical services units.

  • Answer emergency and non-emergency telephone calls.
  • Receive, analyze, and transmit information to field personnel.
  • Operate computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems and multi-channel radios.
  • Maintain accurate logs and records of calls and dispatches.
  • Coordinate with other public safety agencies as needed.
  • Provide pre-arrival instructions to callers when appropriate.
