Job Description

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) is hiring a Marine Engineer (Assistant/Associate) Professor for the Department of Marine Engineering at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.

This is a full-time, temporary faculty appointment in the Excepted Service, with an initial term not to exceed two years.

Reappointments to additional one- or two-year terms are possible, and tenure may be achieved after four to six years, leading to permanent employment contingent on satisfactory annual performance appraisals.

As a Marine Engineer Professor, you will develop and conduct educational courses and programs within the Department of Marine Engineering. Qualification

To qualify for this Marine Engineer Professor position, you must meet education, licensing, and specialized experience requirements. The role is open at both Assistant and Associate Professor levels, with differing degree and experience thresholds.

  • Assistant Professor: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Marine or Mechanical Engineering or a related field (e.g., naval architecture, naval engineering, ocean engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering).

  • Sea service as a licensed engineer officer, relevant shipyard planning/production/scheduling/business operations experience ashore, or power-plant operator experience may substitute for teaching experience on a one-for-one basis.
  • Applicants must possess a current (not expired) US Coast Guard License (or equivalent) valid for service on US Flag Commercial Ships as a 2nd Assistant Engineer, Unlimited Horsepower. A valid STCW certificate is preferred.
  • License substitution: Possession of a valid Professional Engineer license in Marine or Mechanical Engineering, experience as a shipyard superintendent or project manager, shipping company Port Engineer, US Navy Engineering Duty officer (144X), US Coast Guard Naval Engineer or Marine Inspector, or a Master's degree (for Assistant Professor) may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities in accountability, computer skills, customer service, developing others, and education/training will be evaluated.
