Job Description

The Department of the Navy is seeking a skilled Welder (WG-11) to join its team at the Point Loma Complex in San Diego, California.

This federal position supports naval shipyard and maintenance facilities, including Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Trident Refit Facility Bangor, and Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard.

As a Welder, you will perform critical welding tasks on piping, parts, and structures, ensuring they meet rigorous Navy standards for strength, tightness, and pressure.

Your work will involve identifying metals and alloys by color code and standard markings, using various welding machines and processes, and inspecting completed projects to acceptance standards of NDT and other tests.

You will also use test methods to determine metal or alloy composition. This role requires precision, attention to detail, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. This position is ideal for experienced welders who thrive in a structured, public service environment.

You will contribute directly to the readiness and capability of the U.S. Navy fleet.

Estimated market salary: $29 - $48 per hour.

Qualification

To qualify for the Welder WG-11 position, you must demonstrate through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties. The screen-out element is: Ability to perform the work without more than normal supervision. Applicants who do not receive at least two points on this element will be found ineligible.

  • Experience can include paid and unpaid work, including volunteer service through National Service programs.
  • Must meet OPM Job Qualification Handbook for Trades and Labor Occupations.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in direct deposit pay program.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
Role Responsibilities

Identify and associate metals, alloys, and filler metal by color code and standard markings.

  • Produce welds meeting acceptance standards of NDT, strength, tightness, or pressure tests.
  • Use test methods for determining metals or alloys.
  • Inspect completed welding projects for quality and compliance.
  • Operate various welding machines and processes to weld piping, parts, or structures.
  • Work in environments with potentially harmful physical and chemical agents; wear personal protective equipment.
  • May be required to work uncommon tours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Travel to CONUS and OCONUS locations, including remote or isolated sites, may be required.
