Job Description

The Department of the Navy is hiring a Machinist Supervisor I to oversee machining operations at Point Loma Complex in San Diego, California.

In this WS-10 supervisory role, you will lead a team using conventional and computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools to repair and manufacture parts from raw stock.

You will determine work procedures, select machine tools and attachments, and set speeds and feeds to achieve required finishes and tolerances. Work is performed from blueprints, sketches, work orders, or models.

You will also establish dimensions, chase threads, machine angular surfaces, and perform layout work for setups on conventional or CNC equipment.

This position requires adapting equipment for unusual machining processes, using special or improvised tools and fixtures to machine curved surfaces requiring feeds in different planes simultaneously.

Materials include aluminum, brass, bronze, high carbon and alloy steels, chrome, nickel, titanium, molybdenum, super alloys, nylon, rubber, plastics, and Teflon. The role is full-time with a closing date of October 13, 2026. Applicants must be U.S.

Estimated market salary: $98,000 - $124,000 per year.

Qualification

To qualify for the Machinist Supervisor I position (WS-10), you must demonstrate through experience and training the ability to lead or supervise. This is a screen-out element: applicants who do not receive at least two points on this element will be found ineligible.

  • Ability to lead or supervise (screen-out element).
  • Experience using conventional and CNC machine tools and attachments.
  • Knowledge of machining operations on various metals and materials.
  • Skill in reading blueprints, sketches, and work orders.
  • Ability to determine work procedures, machine tools, and attachments.
  • Experience with layout work, dimensioning, and threading.
  • Quality of experience is emphasized over length of time.
Role Responsibilities

Supervise machinists in repair and manufacture of parts from raw stock.

  • Select and set up conventional and CNC machine tools and attachments.
  • Determine speeds, feeds, and sequence of machining operations.
  • Work from blueprints, sketches, work orders, or models.
  • Perform layout work, locate reference points, and mark surfaces.

  • Ensure work meets required finishes and tolerances.
