About County of San Luis Obispo
The County of San Luis Obispo was established in 1850 as one of the original 27 counties in California. The county government provides more than 700 public services, including law enforcement, animal control, flu shots, transportation planning, foster care, and more. The region spans approximately 3,300 square miles with 100 miles of coastline, divided into five supervisory districts each represented by an elected official on the Board of Supervisors. The Board sets governing policies for unincorporated areas, while many services are extended to incorporated cities as an extension of the State.
As of July 2026, the County of San Luis Obispo has tentatively adopted a balanced budget for Fiscal Year 2026-27, authorizing approximately $1.02 billion in Governmental Funds expenditures, including $834.8 million in General Fund spending. The budget maintains a Board-directed contingency reserve and reflects ongoing financial rebalancing efforts. The county continues to monitor federal and state legislative impacts on programs such as Medi-Cal and CalFresh.
