About North Slope Borough

The North Slope Borough is the northernmost municipal government in the United States, encompassing nearly 95,000 square miles across northern Alaska. Established on July 2, 1972, the Borough works with tribes, cities, corporations, schools, and businesses to support a strong culture, encourage healthy lifestyles, and sustain a vibrant economy. Its mission is to have healthy communities economically, spiritually, and culturally. The Borough provides essential services including administration, finance, public safety, health and social services, housing, education support, infrastructure maintenance, and wildlife management. It also preserves and promotes Iñupiat culture through dedicated programs and initiatives.

North Slope Borough today

As of July 2026, the North Slope Borough continues to serve its eight communities: Anaktuvuk Pass, Atqasuk, Kaktovik, Nuiqsut, Point Hope, Point Lay, Utqiagvik, and Wainwright. Mayor Josiah Aullaqsruaq Patkotak leads the Borough, with recent initiatives including the Taiguaqta early literacy program launched in partnership with the North Slope Borough School District. The Borough is actively managing public safety, infrastructure, and community health, as reflected in recent news about an officer-involved shooting investigation and a power outage response. The employment page notes a housing shortage, advising applicants to consider this factor.
