About Criminal Division

The Criminal Division is a litigating component of the United States Department of Justice, headquartered in Washington, D.C. Established in 1919 by Attorney General Alexander Mitchell Palmer, the Division enforces federal criminal statutes and related civil laws in a vigorous, fair, and effective manner. It supervises the enforcement of all federal criminal laws except those specifically assigned to other divisions, and builds the capacity of foreign rule-of-law counterparts. The Division is led by an Assistant Attorney General and includes sections such as Fraud, Money Laundering and Forfeiture, Computer Crime and Intellectual Property, Child Exploitation and Obscenity, and Human Rights and Special Prosecutions, among others.

The Criminal Division serves the public interest through the enforcement of criminal statutes and related civil statutes. Its major functions include developing, enforcing, and supervising federal criminal laws; conducting and supervising investigations and prosecutions of international drug trafficking, organized crime, public corruption, human rights violations, child exploitation, cybercrime, and financial fraud; approving sophisticated investigative authorities such as electronic surveillance; advising the Attorney General on criminal law matters; coordinating with foreign countries for fugitive return and evidence; formulating criminal enforcement policy; leading the Department's Asset Forfeiture Program; administering the U.S. Victims of State Sponsored Terrorism Fund; enforcing federal criminal tax law; and building capacity of foreign law enforcement through training and attaché deployment.

As of September 2025, the Criminal Division operates under the leadership of Assistant Attorney General approved by Attorney General Pamela Bondi. The Division continues to enforce federal criminal laws, oversee asset forfeiture, and provide training to domestic and international law enforcement partners. Its organizational structure includes multiple deputy assistant attorneys general overseeing sections such as Fraud, Money Laundering and Forfeiture, Computer Crime and Intellectual Property, Child Exploitation and Obscenity, and Human Rights and Special Prosecutions.
