About Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS)
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is the federal government's human resources agency, serving as the chief human capital strategist for the executive branch. OPM leads and serves the federal government in enterprise human resources management by delivering policies and services to achieve a trusted, effective civilian workforce. Its mission is to empower excellence in government through great people, and it oversees a wide range of HR functions including hiring, pay and leave, performance management, insurance, retirement, and suitability. OPM administers major federal benefits programs such as the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program, the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP), the Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) Program, and the Federal Flexible Spending Account Program (FSAFEDS). It also manages the Postal Service Health Benefits (PSHB) Program and provides guidance on veterans' employment, disability employment, and tribal consultation. The agency is headquartered in Washington, D.C., with additional offices including a location in Montgomery, Alabama. OPM offers career opportunities for HR professionals and others interested in federal service. Its HR Career Compass tool guides federal HR professionals along their career journeys, and the agency provides resources for students, recent graduates, individuals with disabilities, and veterans. OPM also operates the Federal Executive Institute for developing senior leaders in the U.S. government.
As of July 2026, OPM continues to administer federal benefits programs and HR policies. The 2025 Federal Benefits Open Season has concluded, and the next open season is scheduled for November 2026. The Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) remains under a suspension of new enrollments and coverage increases, extended through December 2026. OPM is actively updating its HR Career Compass and other resources to support federal HR professionals.
