About Central Arizona Project

Central Arizona Project (CAP) is a 336-mile water delivery system that supplies Colorado River water to more than 5 million people in Maricopa, Pima and Pinal counties. CAP carries water from Lake Havasu near Parker to the southern boundary of the San Xavier Indian Reservation southwest of Tucson. The system includes aqueducts, tunnels, pumping plants and pipelines, and delivers more tribal water than any other organization in the United States. CAP is managed by the Central Arizona Water Conservation District and governed by a 15-member board of directors.

Department information

The Arizona Reconsultation Committee (ARC) is a committee convened by the Arizona Department of Water Resources and Central Arizona Project to develop an Arizona perspective on the reconsultation of the Colorado River Interim Guidelines for Lower Basin Shortages and the Coordinated Operations for Lake Powell and Lake Mead (the 2007 Guidelines). The committee includes delegates from the Lower Basin Drought Contingency Plan Steering Committee and meets regularly to discuss and coordinate Arizona's position.

As of 2026, CAP continues to manage and deliver Colorado River water to central and southern Arizona. The organization is actively involved in the Arizona Reconsultation Committee process to develop new guidelines for Colorado River management beyond 2026.
