The United States Coast Guard is a military service and a branch of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, responsible for maritime safety, security, and environmental stewardship. With over 78,000 personnel, the Coast Guard operates across 95,000 miles of coastline, conducting missions that include search and rescue, drug interdiction, port security, and defense operations. In 2025, the service saved over 5,200 lives and interdicted 231 metric tons of drugs, facilitated $5.4 trillion in commerce, and maintained 50,000 aids to navigation. The Coast Guard is organized into Atlantic and Pacific Areas, with units ranging from cutters and aircraft to small boats and shore facilities, supported by a robust logistics and mission support infrastructure.

As of July 2026, the Coast Guard continues to execute its statutory missions under the leadership of Commandant Admiral Kevin Lunday, who assumed command on January 15, 2026. Recent operations include rescuing an overdue diver in the Florida Keys (July 11, 2026), promoting safe boating for July 4th weekend in Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands (July 2, 2026), and offloading over $53 million in cocaine at Port Everglades (April 27, 2026). The service is also implementing Force Design 2028, a modernization initiative to grow the workforce by 15,000 members and enhance technology and acquisition processes.
