About The National Cardio-Vet Network
The VHA Office of Rural Health (ORH) was established in 2006 by legislative mandate to study the specific needs of rural Veterans and the barriers they face to accessing care, as well as the challenges of delivering health care services in rural and highly rural areas. ORH collaborates with medical, rehabilitation, health services, and implementation science research programs to improve access to VHA and community health care. Through Enterprise-Wide Initiatives (EWIs) and field-based Veterans Rural Health Resource Centers (VRHRCs), ORH supports the VHA Under Secretary for Health to meet the intent of the Congressional mandate. ORH strives to honor America’s rural Veterans by providing exceptional health care access and outcomes.
Department information
The CARDIO-VET Network (Cardiology Access and Resources for Delivery of Integrated Outreach to VETerans), formerly the National Cardiology Hub and Spoke Network, is an Enterprise-Wide Initiative of the VHA Office of Rural Health. It provides rural Veterans streamlined access to invasive cardiovascular procedure care in high-complexity VA medical centers (hubs) through initial access to VA cardiology services close to home, nurse navigation, and travel support to and from hub VA facilities. The goal is to expand procedural healthcare access for rural Veterans with cardiovascular disease, leveraging outstanding cardiology services within VHA.

As of July 2026, the VHA Office of Rural Health continues to operate Enterprise-Wide Initiatives including the CARDIO-VET Network, Home-Based Primary Care, and Rural Suicide Prevention programs. ORH serves approximately 3 million enrolled rural Veterans out of 9.3 million Veterans enrolled with VHA. The office is headquartered at 810 Vermont Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20420.
