The United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Georgia is hiring an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) for the Civil Division in Columbus.
This position offers the opportunity to perform important public service by representing the interests of the United States in civil actions.
AUSAs in the Civil Division handle defensive litigation under the Federal Tort Claims Act, Administrative Procedures Act, Title VII, constitutional torts, and habeas corpus claims in immigration matters.
Qualification
Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree and be an active member of the bar in any U.S. Jurisdiction by their entry on duty date. Law school graduates and current law students taking the July 2026 bar exam may be considered. U.S. Citizenship is required.

Role Responsibilities
Represent the United States as primary counsel in civil litigation in federal district court.
- Handle defensive litigation under the Federal Tort Claims Act, Administrative Procedures Act, Title VII, and constitutional torts.
- Litigate habeas corpus claims in immigration matters.
- Pursue Affirmative Civil Enforcement (ACE) actions to enforce federal law.
- Conduct hearings, oral arguments, and trials.
- Prepare legal documents including pleadings, motions, and briefs.
- Provide legal advice to federal client agencies.
- Collaborate with other AUSAs, support staff, and agency representatives.
- Manage a diverse caseload of civil matters.
- Perform other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the office.
Conditions & Requirements
Initial appointment conditioned on satisfactory preemployment adjudication including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing.
- Continued employment subject to favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
- Must reside within the district or within 25 miles thereof (per 28 U.S.C. § 545).

- Salary is administratively determined based on years of professional attorney experience. For Columbus, GA, the range is $81,160
- $190,431 (includes 23.79% locality pay).
