The Clinical Chaplain Pastoral Educator (CPE) serves as a experienced chaplain and educator within the Veterans Health Administration at the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center in Aspinwall, Pennsylvania.
This role integrates frank patient spiritual care with the administration of a Clinical Pastoral Education center, training coming chaplains in a clinical setting.
The incumbent supplies complete religious, spiritual, and pastoral care to Veterans, caregivers, and staff, addressing the spiritual component of health and wellness across all patient care settings.
As a certified CPE educator, the chaplain develops and implements educational curricula, recruits and supervises CPE students, and confirms scheme compliance with accreditation standards. This role is ideal for an experienced board-certified chaplain who holds a present ecclesiastical endorsement and has wrapped up at least four units of CPE.
The perform area involves collaboration with interdisciplinary treatment teams, community bodies, and academic affiliates to provide complete care and training. Function schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm. Telework isn’t open, and relocation incentives aren’t cleared.
Salary & Compensation
Salary / Pay Package: $91,627 - $119,120 per year.
Qualification
To qualify for this GS-12 Clinical Chaplain Pastoral Educator post, you must meet basic conditions including U.S. Citizenship, English proficiency, and a Master of Divinity or equivalent graduate theological degree from an accredited institution.
Also, you must be a board-certified chaplain with existing ecclesiastical endorsement and CPE educator certification.
- U.S. Citizenship required; non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens can’t be recruited (38 U.S.C. § 7407(a)).
- Proficiency in spoken and written English (38 U.S.C. § 7403(f)).
- Master of Divinity degree or equivalent graduate theological degree from a CHEA- or ATS-accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education must be evaluated by a NACES participant agency.
- Board certification as a chaplain by BCCI or a U.S. Certifying body with reciprocity agreement; certification requiring 4 units of CPE is qualifying.
- Current ecclesiastical endorsement dated within the past 12 months from the candidate's faith cluster's national endorsing authority.
- CPE Educator certification by an agency whose CPE units are recognized by BCCI or a reciprocating body.
- One year of creditable experience equivalent to GS-11, covering advance care planning education, spiritual counseling, workforce resiliency assist, and training healthcare team in spiritual screening.
- Must pass pre-employment physical, background/security investigation, and participate in seasonal influenza vaccination plan.
- Selective Solution Registration needed for males born after 12/31/1959.
- Completion of a 1- or 2-year trial period as a condition of employment.

Role Responsibilities
- Offer complete religious, spiritual, and pastoral care to Veterans, caregivers, and workforce across all patient care settings.
- Serve as certified CPE educator, managing everyday operations of the CPE Center, developing curricula, and supervising students.
- Recruit, meeting, and choose students for the CPE scheme; keep up records for accreditation and compliance.
- Build and put in place outcome-oriented, evidence-based educational curricula meeting board certification competencies.
- Give extended pastoral counseling to patients facing involved ethical, moral, or spiritual concerns.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary treatment teams to integrate spiritual care into complete healthcare offerings.
- Organize with community institutions for spiritual care and educational outreach.
- Carry out research and evaluate plan effectiveness to enhance educational solutions and spiritual care practices.
