Job Description
Yuma County is seeking a County Engineer (Grade 29) to lead the engineering division and serve as the chief engineer and general manager of the Flood Control District.
This role is appointed by the Board of Supervisors and has countywide responsibility for all highways, engineering construction, improvements, alterations, and repairs to county property.
The County Engineer is also the custodian of records and property related to surveying, engineering, and road construction, and creates surveys, maps, plans, and specifications as required by the Board.
This position is ideal for an experienced engineering leader who thrives on managing complex infrastructure projects and ensuring public safety through effective flood control management.
Salary & Compensation
Salary: $59.26 - $74.08 per hour.
Qualification
This position requires a professional engineering license and significant experience in civil engineering, project management, and public works.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Arizona or ability to obtain within six months.
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in civil engineering, including at least 5 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Experience with flood control district operations and regulations (A.R.S. § 48-3603(C)(14)).
- Knowledge of Arizona state laws and regulations governing county roads, surveys, and engineering projects.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel within the county.
- Experience in budget preparation and administration for engineering departments.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working with the Board of Supervisors, other agencies, and the public.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, coordinate, and supervise the operations of engineering and construction projects.
- Serve as custodian of records and property related to surveying, engineering, and road construction.
- Have charge of all highways, other engineering construction, improvements, alterations, and repairs to county property.
- Create surveys, maps, plans, and specifications required by the Board of Supervisors.
- Serve as chief engineer and general manager of the Flood Control District.
- Apply independent judgment in determining and assigning work methods, techniques, and procedures.
- Formulate and execute work activity plans for construction and design projects.
- Prepare and administer the engineering department budget.
- Coordinate with other county departments, state agencies, and contractors on engineering projects.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and safety standards.

- Employment relationship is 'at will' – employee may be terminated at any time, with or without cause.
- Position has countywide responsibility and may require travel throughout Yuma County.
- Must pass a background check and drug screening.
- May be required to work evenings, weekends, or during emergencies.
- Must maintain professional engineering licensure in good standing.
