Job Description

The VA Caribbean Healthcare System is seeking a Food Service Worker (WG-3) to join the Nutrition & Food Service at the San Juan VA Medical Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

This full-time permanent role involves preparing and serving meals, portioning food, setting up dining areas, delivering patient trays, and cleaning kitchen equipment. The position requires standing for eight hours, lifting up to 20 pounds unassisted, and working in a fast-paced kitchen environment with heat, steam, and noise.

Salary & Compensation

Salary: $18.89 - $22.04 per hour.

  • Physical requirements: Heavy work including scouring large utensils, pushing heavy carts, standing 8 hours a day, lifting up to 20 lbs unassisted, occasionally moving objects over 20 lbs with assistance.
  • Working conditions: Kitchen area and patient wards; requires wearing hairnet and disposable gloves; exposure to hot liquids, sharp blades, hot surfaces, and extreme temperature changes.
  • This job does not have an education qualification requirement.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Set up and break down assigned station with correct supplies and food items.
  • Portion food items into standard serving sizes using proper utensils and specified dishware.
  • Select and place correct items on patient trays.
  • Decide what food items to serve for the most common diets.
  • Identify obvious discrepancies between prescribed diets and food items designated by the menu.
  • Set up dining room tables for service, place food and beverages on tables, and replenish items as necessary.
  • Deliver meal trays to patients' bedsides and report patient comments and complaints to supervisor or dietitian.
  • Assist cooks in food preparation area: weigh, measure, and assemble ingredients according to standardized recipes.
  • Prepare fresh fruit, cold salads, dressings, sandwich fillings, cold sandwiches, and simple cold desserts.
  • Read and interpret regular or modified menus and individual diet cards.
