Job Description

The Veterans Health Administration is hiring an ICU fee basis Physician at the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This full-time temporary position focuses on providing expert critical care in the Intensive Care Unit.

The physician will evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with critical illnesses, perform procedures such as central line placement and airway management, and collaborate with hospitalists, nurses, and other specialists.

The work area is accountable to the Chief of ICU and Chief of Medicine Service. Fee basis means compensation is based on CPT codes performed per shift, not a fixed salary.

This position is ideal for board-certified or board-eligible intensivists who want to serve veterans in a supportive federal environment. Work schedule is 12-hour shifts. Telework is not available. Relocation incentives are not authorized, but per diem is authorized.

Salary / Pay Package: $3,200 per year.

Qualification

To qualify for this ICU fee basis Physician position, you must meet basic requirements including U.S. Citizenship (non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited).. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an approved school.. A current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine.. And completion of an ACGME- or AOA-approved residency. Additionally, completion of a Critical Care Fellowship and experience in central line placement and airway management are required.

  • Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a VA-approved school.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (ACGME or AOA).
  • Completion of a Critical Care Fellowship.
  • Experience in procedures including central line placement and airway management.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical examination and drug screening.
  • Selective Service registration for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Participation in seasonal influenza vaccination program required.
Role Responsibilities

Evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients in the Intensive Care Unit.

  • Perform critical care procedures including central line placement and airway management.
  • Provide consultative evaluations for general medical wards, surgical wards, and the emergency department.
  • Coordinate treatment plans with hospitalists, primary care providers, nursing, social workers, and other staff.
  • Document clinical notes timely, including H&P, consult reviews, discharge summaries, and medication reconciliation.
  • Adhere to VA policies and ensure high-quality, compassionate patient care.
  • Participate in administrative functions as assigned by the Chief of Medicine Service.
