Job Description
The Commander, Navy Installations Command is hiring a Lead Firefighter (BLS/HAZMAT Technician) at Naval Air Station Kingsville, Texas.
This GS-8 position leads a crew of three or more firefighters on a pumper, aerial ladder truck, or rescue vehicle during firefighting and rescue operations.
You will direct the operation of firefighting equipment such as pumps, turrets, extended waterways, and ground sweep nozzles.
Qualification
To qualify for this GS-8 Lead Firefighter position, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent in the private/public sector. Specialized experience includes performing rescue operations, assisting in fire hazard reduction, operating firefighting vehicles and equipment, and performing non-invasive emergency medical procedures. This position also requires specific certifications awarded by DoD, IFSAC, or ProBoard.
- At least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to GS-7, including: performing rescue operations; assisting in reduction/elimination of potential fire hazards; operating firefighting vehicles, apparatuses, or equipment; and performing non-invasive emergency and medical procedures.
- Certifications required (copies must be submitted): Firefighter I/II, Airport Firefighter, HazMat Operations, HazMat Technician (must obtain within 1 year), Driver Operator Pumper, Driver Operator ARFF, Driver Operator Aerial, Fire Officer I, Fire Inspector I, Fire Instructor I.
- Certifications must be awarded by DoD, IFSAC, or ProBoard.
- National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Basic (NREMT-B) (BLS) certification required.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must not have reached 37th birthday by date of appointment (exceptions/waivers may apply).
- Must pass a pre-appointment physical examination and pre-employment drug test (including marijuana).
- Must possess a valid U.S. driver's license.
- Must participate in the fitness/wellness program and use all safety equipment provided.
- Must participate on a Hazardous Materials Team (HAZMAT).
Role Responsibilities
Lead a crew of three or more firefighters assigned to staff a pumper, aerial ladder truck, or rescue vehicle in firefighting and rescue operations.
- Direct the operation of firefighting equipment such as pumps, turrets, extended waterways, and ground sweep nozzles.
- Establish on-scene control procedures (e.g., zone control, decontamination) at hazardous material incidents.
- Identify training requirements to correct an employee's performance.
- Perform non-invasive emergency and medical procedures as an NREMT-B.
- Operate and maintain firefighting vehicles and apparatuses.
- Conduct fire prevention inspections and hazard reduction activities.
- Respond to aircraft and structural fire emergencies.
- Participate in drills, training, and physical fitness programs.
- Maintain required certifications and licenses.
