Job Description
The City of North Liberty Recreation Department is hiring a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor to work at the North Liberty Community Center Aquatics.
In this role, you will safeguard all guests from accidents, injury, or drowning through alertness and firm, courteous enforcement of pool rules.
You will also teach swimming lessons to individuals and small groups of all ages and abilities, ensuring a safe, educational, and enjoyable aquatic environment.
Qualification
To qualify for the Lifeguard/Swim Instructor position, you must have current lifeguard certification and swim instructor certification (or ability to obtain). Prior experience in lifeguarding or teaching swim lessons is preferred.
- Current Lifeguard certification (e.g., American Red Cross or equivalent).
- Current Swim Instructor certification (e.g., American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or equivalent).
- Ability to obtain certifications before start date if not currently held.
- Knowledge of pool rules, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to enforce rules firmly and fairly while explaining their purpose professionally.
- Strong swimming skills and comfort in deep water.
- Ability to administer deep-water tests and monitor weak swimmers.
- First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer certifications (or ability to obtain).
- Prior experience in lifeguarding or teaching swim lessons preferred.
- Must be at least 16 years of age (or as required by state law).
Role Responsibilities
Safeguard all guests from accidents, injury, or drowning through alertness and enforcement of pool rules.
- Be prepared to respond to troubled patrons, drowning victims, or guests in the pool and surrounding area.
- Enforce pool policies and procedures in a firm, fair, and courteous manner.
- Administer deep-water tests to all swimmers and ensure weak swimmers stay in shallow water areas.
- Teach swimming lessons to individuals and small groups of all ages and abilities.
- Provide instruction on water safety, stroke technique, and swimming skills.
- Perform light facility maintenance such as cleaning pool decks, checking equipment, and maintaining a safe environment.
- Represent the City of North Liberty Recreation Department professionally at all times.
- Attend required training and staff meetings.
- Complete incident reports and other documentation as needed.

Must pass a background check (if required by the City).
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Physical ability to perform rescues, swim, and stand for extended periods.
- Must adhere to all City of North Liberty policies and procedures.
- May be required to work in outdoor weather conditions.
