Job Description
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District, is hiring a Marine Equipment Repairer/Operator (Dual Rate) to serve aboard its hopper dredges, the Yaquina and Essayons. These specialized sea-going vessels uphold protected navigation channels by dredging ocean bars, rivers, and harbors.
As a dual-rate crew participant, you’ll perform both repair and operator tasks, ensuring machinery runs reliably during dredging operations. You’ll oil and grease all machinery, monitor systems on routine rounds, verify bilges, operate bilge pumps, and oversee fuel oil transfers.
You’ll also support with repairing diesel engines and run routine maintenance on propulsion, pumping, auxiliary systems, ventilation, controls, sanitary, and lubrication systems. This role is perfect for experienced marine mechanics who thrive in a hands-on, seagoing environment.
The role gives a collaborative staff atmosphere and the shot to support critical waterway infrastructure. Work is performed under the general supervision of the engineer on view. You must be comfortable with extended time at sea, as temporary responsibility travel is called for 95% of the time.
Salary & Compensation
Pay / Pay Package: $4,742 per hour.
Qualification
To qualify for this WK-8 role, you must demonstrate the aptitude to perform the operate without more than typical supervision. You must have a current U.S.
Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with a Qualified Participant of the Engine Department (QMED) Oiler's rating or higher, plus a legitimate Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).

- Possess a present USCG MMC with QMED Oiler rating or higher.
- Hold a sound Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
- Capacity to do the perform of a Marine Equipment Repairer/Operator without more than standard supervision (screen-out element).

Role Responsibilities
- Oil and grease all machinery aboard the hopper dredge.
- Monitor all machinery on steady rounds, checking bilges and operating bilge pumps.
- Work manifold switch oil level from one tank to another.
- Aid with making repairs to diesel engines.
- Carry out routine maintenance of diesel propulsion system, pumping and auxiliary systems, ventilation controls, auxiliary engines, automatic control consoles, sanitary and lubrication systems.
- Operate under general supervision of the engineer on watch.
- Keep up safety compliance, wear protective gear, and follow sound safety practices.
