The New York Army National Guard is hiring a Motor Vehicle Operator (WG-5703-8) to join its Logistics section in Latham, NY.
In this role, you will operate and perform operator maintenance on straight-in-line trucks with a gross vehicle weight over 32,000 pounds, as well as truck tractors with semi-trailers or full trailers and motor coaches.
You will transport personnel, supplies, materials, and equipment over interstate highways, narrow country roads, and steep winding grades.
Qualification
This position requires current enlisted membership in the New York Army National Guard. You must have general experience following instructions and safely operating equipment, plus 12 months of specialized experience operating and maintaining straight-in-line trucks over 32,000 pounds GVW, truck tractors with trailers, and motor coaches on varied roads.
- Military Grade: Enlisted (any rank) in the New York Army National Guard.
- General Experience: Ability to follow instructions and safely operate the type of equipment required for the duties.
- Specialized Experience: 12 months operating and performing operator maintenance on straight-in-line trucks with GVW over 32,000 pounds.
- Experience operating truck tractors with semi-trailers or full trailers.
- Experience operating motor coaches.
- Experience driving on interstate highways, narrow country roads, and steep winding grades.
- Experience driving without mishap in complicated traffic situations.
- Must be a current member of the National Guard or Reserves, or willing and eligible to join the NYNG.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
- Education is not required for this position.
Role Responsibilities
Operate straight-in-line trucks (GVW >32,000 lbs) to transport personnel, supplies, materials, or equipment.
- Operate truck tractors with semi-trailers or full trailers.
- Operate motor coaches for personnel transport.
- Perform operator maintenance on assigned vehicles, including pre-trip inspections and basic repairs.
- Manage interstate highways, narrow country roads, and steep winding grades safely.
- Drive in complicated traffic situations without mishap.
- Load and unload cargo, ensuring proper weight distribution and securement.
- Maintain vehicle logs and report any mechanical issues.
Conditions & Requirements
Current membership in the New York Army National Guard is required before appointment.
- Must wear the military uniform while on duty.
- Acceptance of this excepted service position constitutes concurrence with military membership requirements.
- May be required to complete a two-year trial period.
- Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
- Must possess a valid state driver's license for the state of residence or principal employment.
- Subject to irregular and overtime hours, including compensatory time.
