Nurse Manager

To qualify for this Nurse Manager position, you must be a U.S. Citizen (non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited) and meet the basic education and licensure requirements for professional nursing as outlined in VA Handbook 5005.

• English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in basic written and spoken English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) for direct patient care positions.
• Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by ACEN or CCNE at the time of program completion. OR individuals attending a master's level bridge program who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's degree in nursing may be appointed temporarily upon state licensure and converted to permanent after graduation.
• Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
• Foreign Education: Graduates of foreign nursing schools must have a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration to meet the requirement for an associate degree/entry level. Higher education requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized evaluation service such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD).
• Grade Determination: Candidates are assigned a grade (Nurse I, II, or III) based on education, scope of practice, and experience. For Nurse III, requires MSN and 2 years of specialized nursing experience (one year equivalent to Nurse II) or a doctoral degree with one year of experience.
• Grandfathering: Current VHA employees in the 0610 series performing the duties as described in the qualification standard as of January 29, 2024, are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held.
• Experience: Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work, is qualifying. Experience will be evaluated on five dimensions: Practice, Veteran/Patient Driven Care, Leadership, Professional Development, and Evidence-Based Practice/Research.

Serve as designated first-line supervisory authority, responsible and accountable for the operation of assigned units and providing coverage for other Nurse Managers as needed.

• Direct and supervise specific orientation, training, and development of staff, and evaluate individual staff performance.
• Equip staff with tools for culturally competent care and promote a culture of accountability for high-quality, cost-effective outcomes.
• Cultivate alliances across the care continuum, building trust through active listening, engagement, and emotional intelligence.
• Participate in the development of care delivery models and environmental design, ensuring evidence-based, accessible, affordable, and equitable patient care.
• Ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory standards.
• Align nursing/clinical objectives with organizational strategic outcomes, participating in strategy planning and execution.
• Promote an inclusive workplace valuing diversity to achieve the organization's vision and mission.
• Maintain knowledge of and ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards, directives, and policies.
