Job Description
The Department of Defense, through the Defense Health Agency (DHA), seeks a full-time Optometrist (Clinical) to cater to at Army Health Clinic Moncrief, based on Fort Jackson, South Carolina. This role is within the Directorate of Surgery, Optometry Service.
As the Vision Conservation Officer, you’ll perform complete and restricted visual and ocular examinations, diagnose conditions, treat minor pathology, and handle a complete variety of eye and visual obstacles. You’ll also instruct and guide student optometric interns.
This is a Straight Recruit Solicitation, and recruitment or relocation incentives may be approved for very qualified applicants. Salary negotiation may be on offer for those new to Federal offering. The role isn’t telework or remote eligible.
Salary & Compensation
Salary: $122,861 - $159,722 per year.
Qualification
To qualify for this GS-12 Optometrist (Clinical) position, you must be a US Citizen and encounter the fundamental education and license needs, plus one year of specialized know-how or a wrapped up residency.
- US Citizenship needed.
- Doctor of Optometry degree from an ACOE-accredited plan.
- Passing score on the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NEBO) exams.
- Existing, packed, and unrestricted license to practice optometry in a State, DC, Puerto Rico, or US territory.
- One year of professional optometry background at the GS-11 level, covering examining and treating patients with visual disorders or diseases and prescribing medications.
- OR one year of completion of a residency program in an accredited institution.
- Experience may involve paid and unpaid volunteer work (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps).
- Foreign education must be evaluated by a credentialing institution equivalent to US accredited education.
- No substitution of education for expertise is permitted beyond the elementary degree requirement.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist as Vision Conservation Officer for the clinic.
- Perform finalize and narrow visual and ocular examinations on all patient types.
- Diagnose conditions by analyzing test findings, medical/eye history, occupational needs, and environmental effects.
- Treat minor pathology of the eye and adnexa using therapeutic drugs.
- Examine, diagnose, oversee, and treat a complete span of eye and visual issues and ocular diseases.
- Instruct, teach, and guide student optometric interns in all fields of clinical optometry.

- Suitability/fitness determination set on background investigation.
- Personnel Security Investigation called for.
- Obtain and maintain Core Life Aid (BLS) certification from AHA or Red Cross (ALS doesn’t supersede BLS).
- Pre-employment urinalysis drug screening and random drug testing.
- Mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination (exemptions feasible for medical/religious causes).
- Hepatitis B immunization needed for frank patient contact positions.
- Tuberculosis testing required.
- Pre-employment physical examination and annual physical thereafter.
- Aptitude to lift up to 45 pounds.
- Must fulfill credentialing conditions and obtain/maintain clinical privileges.
