Pharmacy Technician - Procurement/Inventory is listed by Northport VA Medical Center. The Northport VA Medical Center is seeking a certified Pharmacy Technician to manage procurement and inventory of all prescription and nonprescription medications and supplies.
This GS-8 role is within the Pharmacy Service and involves purchasing through federal contracts, maintaining inventory control, and ensuring compliance with VA and federal regulations. This position is open to current, permanent Northport VA Medical Center employees only.
The role is full-time, permanent, and not eligible for telework or remote work.
Salary & Compensation
Salary: $65,855 - $85,608 per year.
Qualification
To qualify for this GS-8 Pharmacy Technician position, you must be a current permanent employee of the Northport VA Medical Center. You need one year of experience equivalent to GS-7 and active national certification as a pharmacy technician.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Current, permanent employee of the Northport VA Medical Center.
- One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-7).
- Active national certification through PTCB (CPhT) or NHA (ExCPT).
- Complete knowledge of pharmacy concepts, principles, and policies in a specialized area such as procurement/inventory.
- Skill in training and orienting new employees and students on pharmacy policies and procedures.
- Ability to evaluate, analyze, and coordinate workflow within a specialized pharmacy section.
- Basic knowledge of pharmacy procurement, distribution, and storage requirements including OSHA, FDA, USP, and DEA regulations.
- Ability to determine ordering intervals, inventory levels, and cost-effective quantities based on usage, seasonal variations, and medical need.
- Preferred experience: VA technician, credit card, 2237, procurement.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Serve as ordering officer for pharmacy service, delegated by the VA National Acquisition Center (NAC), maintaining annual training requirements.
- Initiate ordering of pharmaceuticals, specialty items, and supplies through pharmacy prime vendors and other mandatory sources.
- Ensure adherence to federal contracts and compliance with regulations regarding open market purchases.
- Assist in determining ordering intervals and stock levels to meet changes in formulary, brand-to-generic conversions, contract changes, and backorders.
- Procure all types of pharmaceuticals including controlled and non-controlled drugs within VA ordering guidelines and budget utilization.
- Purchase using National contracts (NAT), Federal supply schedules (FSS), and Blanket Purchase Agreements (BPA).
- Maintain inventory control through perpetual evaluation and seasonal adjustments.
- Perform physical exertion including standing, sitting, typing, walking, lifting/carrying up to 40 pounds, and bending/stooping/stretching.

- Subject to urinalysis for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- Selective Service Registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
- Subject to background/security investigation.
- Must complete an online onboarding process.
- Must provide acceptable REAL ID-compliant identification (effective May 7, 2025).
- Must pass pre-employment evaluation.
- Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required.
- Must serve a 1 or 2-year trial period.
