The North Florida / South Georgia Veterans Health System (NFSGVHS) is hiring a Pharmacy Technician to work in the inpatient care areas of the Malcom Randall Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida.

This GS-7 position supports hospital staff by reading and interpreting medication orders, obtaining the correct medication in the proper dose and strength, and ensuring safe dispensing.

As a Pharmacy Technician at this VA medical center, you will handle unit-dose medications, fill and check med-carts, and prepare medications for discharge.

Qualification

To qualify for this GS-7 Pharmacy Technician position, you must be a current Department of Veterans Affairs employee. You need one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level and active national certification as a pharmacy technician (PTCB CPhT or NHA ExCPT).

  • U.S. Citizenship required; non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited.
  • Current Department of Veterans Affairs employee (internal to the agency).
  • One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-6).
  • Active national certification: Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) OR National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT).
  • Knowledge of pharmacy technician principles, practices, concepts, and theories for independent work.
  • Knowledge of computerized prescription processes and input of prescriptions/medication orders.
  • Ability to resolve pharmacy/medication issues with healthcare team members, veterans, and external customers.
  • Ability to train developmental pharmacy technicians and students.
  • Ability to dispense medication or sterile products following regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to troubleshoot automated dispensing equipment (ADE) or technology platforms/databases.
Role Responsibilities

Read and interpret prescriptions; obtain proper medication in correct strength and dosage form.

  • Determine proper amount; count, pour, or measure medications; affix labels; record required data.
  • After pharmacist check, dispense medications in ambulatory care or discharge situations.
  • For unit-dose medications, perform final review of medication prepared by another technician; fill unit-dose carts independently when necessary.
  • Inventory and replenish emergency carts with appropriate medications and supplies.
  • Collect drug use evaluation data for quality improvement purposes.
  • Operate and maintain pharmacy equipment such as unit dose prepackaging machines, automatic dispensing machines, and IV compounding machines.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and technology platforms/databases.
  • Perform all duties of lower graded technicians as required.
  • Provide training and mentorship to new or lower-graded technicians.
