VA Northern California Healthcare System is hiring a Physician Assistant (PA) to join the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) in Primary Care at the Fairfield, CA location.

This full-time, permanent position involves providing complete primary care to Veterans, including conducting history and physical exams, managing chronic conditions, and coordinating care within an interdisciplinary team.

The role is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), offering up to $200,000 in student loan reimbursement.

Qualification

To qualify, you must meet the basic Physician Assistant requirements: a master's degree (or bachelor's with one year PA experience), successful passage of the PANCE, and a full, unrestricted license in any US state or territory. Grade determinations (PA-I, PA-II, PA-III) are based on experience and education.

  • Master's degree in any discipline OR a bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a Physician Assistant.
  • Successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE) or in the process of taking the exam.
  • Currently hold, or will hold, a full and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • PA-I (entry level): No experience beyond basic requirements. Must demonstrate ability to perform patient history and physical, formulate a treatment plan, and provide care aligned with current concepts.
  • PA-II (intermediate): Two years of successful practice as a PA, OR completion of a VA-sponsored or accredited PA postgraduate residency program, OR a doctoral degree in a health-related field. Must demonstrate skills to analyze complex medical problems, function autonomously, and work in interdisciplinary teams.
  • PA-III (full performance): Three years of successful practice as a PA, OR completion of a PA postgraduate residency plus one year of practice, OR a doctoral degree plus one year of practice. Must demonstrate expertise in evaluating patient care delivery systems, diagnosing multi-symptomatic patients, and leading clinical changes.
  • Graduate PAs without licensure may be appointed temporarily for up to two years under 38 U.S.C. § 7405(c)(2)(B).
  • Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.
Role Responsibilities

Conduct complete history and physical examinations for assigned Veterans.

  • Perform medical record reviews and clinical assessments to formulate diagnoses and treatment plans.
  • Provide primary care services within the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) model.
  • Use critical thinking to apply advanced clinical health care knowledge and skills.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to coordinate patient care.
  • Participate in team problem-solving and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Document patient encounters accurately and timely in the electronic health record.
  • Educate patients and families on health maintenance, disease prevention, and treatment options.

  • Participation in seasonal influenza vaccination program required for all VA Health Care Personnel.

FAQs
What is the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) and how do I apply?

EDRP is a student loan repayment program for VA health care professionals. If selected, you must submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval and award amount (up to $200,000) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office. Former EDRP participants are not eligible.

Can I apply if I am not a U.S. citizen?

What is the work schedule and is telework available?
