Job Description

The City of Bell Gardens is hiring a PT Maintenance Worker to perform semi-skilled manual labor in the maintenance and repair of public works facilities. This at-will position works under general supervision and may be rotated through various crews..

With assignments including streets.. Traffic systems.. Sidewalks.. Signs.. Parks.. Graffiti removal.. Storm drains.. Tree trimming and planting.. And abatement of nuisances in the public right of way. The role also involves identifying and repairing plumbing issues at City facilities.

Incumbents may be assigned to work nights, weekends, holidays, and special events. This position is subject to the continued availability of funds and the manpower needs of the City.

It is a temporary/part-time role restricted to a certain number of hours within a 12-month period and does not qualify for City benefits except those required by law.

The City does not belong to the Social Security system; mandatory enrollment in an alternative retirement program (PARS) requires a 7.5% employee contribution.

Qualification

Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for successful job performance related to City maintenance. Typical qualifications include high school graduation or equivalent and experience in graffiti removal, street maintenance, or landscaping.

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Experience in graffiti removal, street maintenance, or landscaping preferred.
  • Valid California Class C driver's license required; satisfactory driving record (original DMV H-6 print out required).
  • Ability to speak Spanish highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of common tools and equipment used in construction and maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of ground maintenance methods, trees, plants, flowers, and shrubs.
  • Ability to communicate in English, both oral and in writing.
  • Skill in operating a variety of equipment and vehicles, and using hand and power tools.
  • Ability to resolve plumbing issues.
  • Must pass a City-paid physical examination, drug screening, background check, and verification of U.S. citizenship or right to work.
Role Responsibilities

Perform semi-skilled manual labor in maintenance and repair of streets, traffic systems, sidewalks, signs, parks, and storm drains.

  • Remove graffiti and abate nuisances in the public right of way.
  • Trim and plant trees; spray pesticides; spread seeds and fertilizer; plant or remove flowers.
  • Operate power mowers, blowers, sweepers, edgers, sprayers, and other equipment or vehicles.
  • Clean and repair restrooms and park equipment; remove trash and debris.
  • Repair roads, pour concrete, and install seasonal street banners.
  • Identify and repair plumbing issues at City facilities.
  • Operate and maintain in-ground sprinkler systems; edge and weed lawns and flower beds.
