Job Description

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is hiring an Aviation Safety Inspector (Airworthiness) to work in the Avionics specialty within the Flight Standards Services division in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. This role is open to U.S.

Citizens, veterans, individuals with disabilities, and those eligible under special hiring authorities. The position is graded FG-9 through FG-12..

With duties scaling from assisting in enforcement investigations and accident inquiries at the FG-9 level to evaluating mechanics and repair facilities for initial certification and continuing adequacy at the FG-12 level.

Qualification

To qualify for this Aviation Safety Inspector (Airworthiness) position at the FG-9 through FG-12 grade levels, you must meet the OPM Qualifications Standard for the Aviation Safety Series (FG-1825) and possess specialized avionics experience. The role requires aircraft avionics experience involving maintenance.. Repair.. And troubleshooting of installed avionics systems.. With work experience within the last 3 years in a repair station.. Air carrier repair facility.. Military repair facility.. Or government agency.

  • Not more than two separate incidents involving Federal Aviation regulations violations in the last 5 years.
  • Valid State driver's license.
  • Fluency in the English language.
  • No chemical dependencies or drug abuse that could interfere with job performance.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Meet job-related medical requirements: good distant vision in each eye (glasses/contacts permitted), ability to hear conversational voice (hearing aid permitted), and no physical condition that would be a hazard to self or others or interfere with flying as a passenger in various aircraft.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
  • Aircraft avionics experience involving maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of installed avionics systems on aircraft.
  • Aircraft avionics work experience (supervision or auditing) in a repair station, air carrier repair facility, military repair facility, or local/state/federal government agency within the last 3 years.
  • For FG-9: developmental assignments such as Lead Avionics Technician, with close review and specific guidelines.
Role Responsibilities

Assist in enforcement investigations and preparation of final reports (FG-9/11).

  • Participate in accident/incident and complaint investigations (FG-9/11).
  • Assist in re-examination of certificated airmen or recertification of an operator or agency (FG-9/11).
  • Assure that aviation organizations and airmen comply with regulatory requirements and report deficiencies to the principal inspector or supervisor (FG-11).
  • Provide assistance in evaluating air carriers, air agencies, and air operators and make recommendations to the principal inspector or supervisor (FG-11).
  • Evaluate mechanics and repair facilities for initial certification and continuing adequacy (FG-12).
  • Evaluate the mechanic's training program (FG-12).
  • Complete an extensive training program including up to 24 months of formal and on-the-job training.
  • Perform duties specific to aircraft avionics experience.
