Qualification
To qualify for the lateral Public Safety Dispatcher position, you must have at least two years of know-how as a public safety dispatcher for a Public Safety Answering Detail (PSAP). This is a journey-level role requiring independent performance of all duties.
- Two years of expertise as a public safety dispatcher at a Public Safety Answering Aspect.
- Understanding of emergency telephone answering techniques, policies, and procedures.
- Familiarity with main roads, streets, highways, key buildings, and public facilities within Hayward town boundaries.
- Capacity to run a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system, video display terminal, teletype, and other related equipment.
- Typing speed of at least 35 words per minute.
- Aptitude to remain steady during emergencies and obtain related details from callers in stressful situations.
- Ability to function various shifts including day, swing, graveyard, weekends, and holidays.
- Efficient verbal and written communication competencies in English.
- Capacity to interpret maps and memorize info from multiple sources.
Role Responsibilities
Receive emergency and non-emergency calls from the public requesting police, fire, or other metro services.
- Work out nature and location of emergency, prioritize calls, and dispatch suitable units per established procedures.
- Employ CAD system to enter calls for service, monitor radio traffic, and track field unit status.
- Work California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) to enter, retrieve, and update data on wanted persons, stolen property, and vehicle registration.
- Coordinate with other law enforcement agencies and relay critical details during multi-agency incidents.
- Dispatch animal control, utilities, and street maintenance team for non-emergency calls as needed.
- Monitor multiple radio frequencies and keep up contact with field units throughout their assignments.
- Complete recovered stolen vehicle reports and aid with organic disaster response communications.
