The Ohio Army National Guard is hiring a Surface Maintenance Mechanic Inspector for the CSMS (Combined Support Maintenance Shop) in Columbus, Ohio. In this WG-11 role, you will inspect many heavy-duty mobile equipment including combat vehicles, tactical trucks, cranes, bulldozers, and artillery.

Qualification

To qualify for the WG-11 Surface Maintenance Mechanic Inspector position, you need general experience in equipment maintenance and specialized experience diagnosing and repairing complex vehicle systems. Ohio Army National Guard membership is required.

  • General Experience: Experience or training demonstrating knowledge of equipment to perform routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance, and use common tools.
  • Specialized Experience: Extensive knowledge of mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of complex interconnecting systems, assemblies, and parts for combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles.
  • Ability to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify interconnected complex systems on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge of state-of-the-art electrical, electronic, complex hydraulic, pneumatic, and other major non-mechanical systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems and their controls.
  • Skill to develop or improvise methods, alter parts, and make repairs without technical guidelines, including modifying parts to fit and designing modifications to correct recurring malfunctions.
  • Military Grade: E-4 through CW2.
  • Compatible military assignment required within one year of placement.
  • Must be a current member of the Ohio Army National Guard or eligible for immediate membership.
  • No education substitution; this job does not have an education qualification requirement.
Role Responsibilities

Inspect a large variety of heavy-duty mobile equipment including combat tanks, tactical vehicles, large cranes, tank retrievers, fire trucks, bridge transporters, bulldozers, road graders, crawler tractors, power shovels, self-propelled earth compacting equipment, and self-propelled artillery.

  • Inspect heavy artillery, small arms, powered support equipment, and other components of equal or lesser complexity.
  • Assist higher-graded inspectors in performing inspections on equipment repairs.
  • Inspect complex interrelated mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electronic, and electrical systems and components while in operation or standby.
  • Perform tests on braking, steering, differential systems, large engines, fuel injection systems, turret stabilization systems, and other combined systems.
  • Verify that physical and operating characteristics meet acceptable standards and specifications.
  • Use a wide variety of inspection processes and techniques.
  • Document inspection findings and communicate repair recommendations.
