Job Description
The Maine Army National Guard is hiring a Surface Maintenance Mechanic for the Joint Forces Headquarters-State, Logistics Directorate (J-4), Surface Maintenance Facility in Auburn, Maine.
This role involves hands-on maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, inspection, and overhaul of many combat, tactical, commercial, and special purpose vehicles and equipment.
You will work on heavy-duty mobile equipment including self-propelled artillery, tracked cargo carriers, road graders, mobile cranes, front loaders, bulldozers, tanks, trucks, forklifts, and more.
Qualification
To qualify for this Surface Maintenance Mechanic position, you must be a current member of the Maine Army National Guard in the grade of CW2 & Below or any Enlisted grade. You need general experience demonstrating knowledge of equipment and ability to perform routine maintenance, plus specialized experience at the WG-08 or WG-10 level.
- Military Grades: CW2 & Below, All Enlisted Grades.
- General Experience: Experience, education, or training showing enough knowledge of equipment to do routine jobs, simple preventative maintenance tasks, and use common tools and equipment.
- WG-08 Specialized Experience: Experience using common hand and power tools and a small variety of test and measurement devices to make mechanical repairs.
- WG-08: Experience removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing parts, components, and accessories.
- WG-08: Basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory applying to vehicles; skill to replace, fit, install, and make adjustments.
- WG-08: Understanding of the makeup and operation of various individual systems and their interrelationships.
- WG-08: Ability to read and interpret parts lists, manufacturers' repair manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics.
- WG-10 Specialized Experience: Experience diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, and modifying more complex vehicles, equipment, and systems.

Role Responsibilities
Troubleshoot, perform maintenance, and major repairs on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat, tactical, and automotive vehicles.
- Work on self-propelled artillery, tracked cargo and personnel carriers, road graders, mobile cranes, front loaders, conveyors, bulldozers, power shovels, compressors, generators, tanks, tracked combat vehicles, sedans, buses, all terrain vehicles, trucks, semi trailers, forklifts, tractors, and accessory equipment.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and overhaul major systems including internal combustion engines, turbine engines, automatic and non-automatic transmissions, heavy duty drive line systems, and hydraulic utility systems and controls.
- Make repairs to assemblies and components such as voltage regulators, generators/alternators, brake cylinders, etc.
- Perform work in accordance with modification work orders and technical manuals.
- Use diagnostic and test equipment such as tachometers, ohmmeters, pressure gauges, etc.
- Interpret technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, and schematics to make repairs and modifications.
- Troubleshoot malfunctions and determine causes of mechanical problems.
Conditions & Requirements
NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. Must be a member of the Maine Army National Guard in a compatible military assignment.
