The Alaska Army National Guard is hiring a Surface Maintenance Repairer (WG-8) to join the JFHQ in Fairbanks, Alaska. This role focuses on performing limited diagnosis, routine repairs, and preventive maintenance on heavy-duty mobile equipment, combat vehicles, tactical vehicles, and automotive vehicles.

You will assist higher graded mechanics in overhauling major systems such as internal combustion engines, turbine engines, transmissions, drive lines, and hydraulic systems.

Typical tasks include removing, adjusting, replacing, and installing parts like wheel seals, switches, sensors, fuel pumps, brakes, filters, radiators, bearings, springs, shock absorbers, and starter motors.

You will use basic test equipment such as compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters, and pressure gauges to diagnose mechanical failures. The position may require field maintenance at unit locations as part of a contact team, recovering and evacuating inoperable vehicles.

You will also perform Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services (PMCS), including brake adjustments, fluid replacements, and greasing. This is a temporary, full-time position with a pay grade of WG-8, offering a salary range of $35.05 to $40.91 per hour.

Qualification

To qualify for the WG-8 Surface Maintenance Repairer position, you must have at least 12 months of experience or training using common hand and power tools and test devices to make mechanical repairs. This experience should include removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing parts and components, as well as a basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory.

  • Understanding of the makeup and operation of individual systems and their interrelationships.
  • Ability to read and interpret parts lists, manufacturer repair manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics.
  • Must be a member of the Alaska Army National Guard (Area 1 or 2).
  • Military grade requirement: minimum Private First Class (PFC/E-3) and maximum Sergeant (SGT/E-5).
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
