Qualification

To qualify for this Teacher position, you must meet the basic requirements and the grade-specific qualifications. The basic requirements can be met through education, a combination of education and experience, or teacher certification.

  • Basic Requirement A: A bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution that included or was supplemented by supervised student teaching and at least one course in each of the following areas: general psychology, human development, history and/or philosophy of education, and teaching methods at the elementary or secondary learning level.

  • Basic Requirement C: Teacher certification or licensure in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. You must submit proof of certification or license at the time of application.
  • For GL-07: One year of graduate-level education or Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.).
  • For GL-09: Two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree, or a master's or equivalent graduate degree.
  • Specialized Experience: For GL-07 and GL-09, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Examples include teaching with full responsibility for instruction, developing lesson plans, maintaining student records, and for GL-09, experience teaching literacy, GED, or ESL programs.
  • Combination of Education and Experience: Graduate-level education and specialized experience may be combined to meet the total experience requirements. Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade may be combined.
  • All education must be from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education must be evaluated for equivalency.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide direct classroom instruction to inmates in literacy, GED, and ESL programs.
  • Plan and implement individualized instructional programs based on assessment data, teaching strategies, learning styles, and available resources.
  • Select and use appropriate teaching techniques, including individual guidance, peer tutoring, cooperative learning, media instruction, computerized instruction, large and small group instruction, or behavior modification.
  • Maintain security of the institution as a correctional employee, with staff correctional responsibilities preceding all other duties on a regular and recurring basis.
