Job Overview

The Federal Bureau of Prisons is hiring a Teacher (Special Education) for FCI Sheridan in Sheridan, Oregon, as of August 2026. This full-time, permanent position (GL 7-9) offers a salary range of $61,620 to $104,610 per year and is open to all U.S. Citizens. In this role, you will plan, develop, and deliver educational programs—such as remedial reading, math, and language arts—to meet the individual learning needs of inmates, while also supporting the institution's security mission.

As a corrections professional, you will help supports a humane and secure environment and prepare individuals for successful reentry into their communities. Qualification

To qualify, you must meet the basic education requirements and either the education or specialized experience for the grade level you are applying to.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution that included or was supplemented by supervised student teaching, and at least one course in each of: general psychology, human development, history and/or philosophy of education, and teaching methods at the elementary or secondary learning level.
  • For secondary school teaching positions, at least 24 semester hours (or equivalent) of course work in each of the principal fields of instruction.
  • At least 24 semester hours (or equivalent) of course work in special education, including at least one course covering the teaching of exceptional students and courses in the appropriate field(s) of specialization.
  • GL-07: One year of graduate-level education OR Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.).
  • GL-09: Two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree OR a master's or equivalent graduate degree.
  • OR one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, with examples provided for GL-07 and GL-09.
  • Combinations of graduate education and specialized experience may also qualify.
  • All education must be from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education; foreign education must be evaluated for equivalency.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, implement, and instruct programs such as remedial reading, math, and language arts to meet the education requirements of inmates with special learning needs.
  • Conduct specialized classes and provide resources to coordinate educational competencies with social adjustments.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement evidence-based, scientific-driven, systematic instruction to effectively meet individualized student goals.
  • Maintain security of the institution, as all staff correctional responsibilities precede all other duties and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.
