Qualification

To qualify for the Accountant III position, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications as established by the City of Portland. These typically include a combination of education and experience in accounting, auditing, or financial management.   • Residency in Oregon or Washington is required for remote work.
Role Responsibilities

Prepare and analyze financial statements, reports, and budgets for assigned bureaus.

  • Perform general ledger reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close processes.
  • Monitor and review financial transactions for accuracy and compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate and support external and internal audits, including preparation of audit schedules and responses.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to bureau management for decision-making.
  • Reconcile grant expenditures and ensure compliance with grant requirements.
  • Train and mentor junior accounting staff as needed.
  • Participate in the annual budget preparation and monitoring process.
  • Use financial software and systems to maintain accurate records and generate reports.
Conditions & Requirements

Must be able to work full-time (40 hours per week) with a standard schedule of Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm.

  • Alternate schedules may be available upon approval.
  • For hybrid positions, must be able to work onsite at 1120 SW 5th Avenue, Portland, OR, at least 50% of the time.
  • Remote work must be performed within Oregon or Washington state.
  • Must pass a background check and any other pre-employment screening required by the City.
