The Veterans Health Administration's Augusta VA Health Care System is hiring an Accounting Technician for the VISN 7 Consolidated Accounting Office (CAO).
This position supports the financial management program by performing technical accounting functions, including maintaining control and subsidiary accounts, processing obligations, accrued expenditures, disbursements, and cost transfers.
The role is split into two primary functions: Obligators and Payers, and you may be assigned to either area.
Qualification
This position is open to current, permanent federal employees only.

- Time-in-Grade for GS-6: You must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05 level in the federal service.
- Time-in-Grade for GS-7: You must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06 level in the federal service.
- Specialized Experience GS-6/7: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, including knowledge of accounting, budget, or financial regulations; assembling and maintaining complex fiscal transactions; reconciling errors; and using automated accounting systems.
- Examples of specialized experience include processing obligations, expenditures, cost transfers, and reconciling subsidiary ledgers to general ledgers.
- Your resume must clearly show job title, duties, month/year start/end dates, and hours per week for each position.
- Part-time experience is credited based on actual hours worked.
- Volunteer work, including through National Service programs, is qualifying experience.
- Education cannot substitute for experience at these grade levels.
- Former federal employees applying for reinstatement or under VEOA must also meet time-in-grade.
Role Responsibilities
Maintain control accounts and subsidiary accounts for obligations, accrued expenditures, disbursements, appropriation refunds, reimbursable orders, earnings, collections, and cost transfers.
- Process accounting transactions including expenditure vouchers, inter-fund bills, travel orders, and training orders.
- Reconcile subsidiary ledgers to general ledgers for multiple accounts.
- Provide assistance and training to fund control point contacts on accounting procedures.
- Use the beneficiary travel application to assist veterans with travel payment questions.
- Input veteran information into the Direct Express Card program for electronic funds transfer of beneficiary travel pay.
- Validate, monitor, and control accounting transactions and records.
- Advise supervisor of unusual training needs for fund control point contacts.

You must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- Subject to a background/security investigation.
- Must complete an online onboarding process and provide acceptable identification (REAL ID compliant after May 7, 2025).
- Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required for all VA Health Care Personnel.
- Must serve a 1-year probationary period.
- A pre-placement physical examination is not required.
- The work is primarily sedentary with no special physical requirements.
