Job Description
The City of Brea Fire Department is seeking an Ambulance Operator to support its emergency ambulance transport program. Under direct supervision, you will operate a city-owned ambulance, respond to medical aid calls, and provide basic life support within your scope of practice.
This is a non-sworn, non-firefighter entry-level classification with a limited-term assignment of 36 months, extendable. The role is designed to give you strong field experience and training for a future career in the fire service.
You will work alongside firefighters and paramedics, performing general duties that support the department's mission.
Qualification
To qualify for the Ambulance Operator position, you must meet the following minimum requirements. This is an entry-level role, so no prior firefighting experience is needed, but you must have the certifications and abilities listed below.
- Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
- Current California State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.
- Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification.
- Ability to pass a background check and pre-employment medical examination.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Physical ability to lift and carry patients and equipment, and perform strenuous tasks in emergency conditions.
Role Responsibilities
Operate a city-owned ambulance in emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Respond to medical aid calls and provide basic life support care to ill or injured persons.
- Assist paramedics and firefighters at emergency scenes.
- Maintain ambulance readiness: clean, stock, and inspect equipment and supplies.
- Complete patient care reports and other required documentation.
- Participate in training drills and continuing education programs.
- Perform station maintenance and other duties as assigned by the Fire Department.
- Adhere to all department policies, protocols, and safety standards.
Conditions & Requirements
Must be a non-sworn/non-firefighter employee; this is not a firefighter position.
