Job Description
The City of San Jose's Department of Planning, Building, and Code Enforcement (PBCE) is hiring a Building Inspector Combination/Certified I/II/III/Senior to join the Building Division.
In this role, you will conduct inspections of residential and commercial construction to ensure compliance with building codes, zoning ordinances, and safety regulations.
You will work closely with contractors, property owners, and the public to provide guidance on code requirements and resolve issues.
Qualification
Applicants must possess a valid Combination Inspector Certification from the International Code Council (ICC) or equivalent. Experience in building inspection, plan review, or construction trades is required. Senior-level candidates need additional years of experience and advanced certifications.
- Valid Combination Inspector Certification from ICC or equivalent.
- For Inspector I: 2 years of building inspection experience.
- For Inspector II: 3 years of experience including at least 1 year as a Combination Inspector I.
- For Inspector III: 4 years of experience including at least 2 years as a Combination Inspector II.
- For Senior: 5 years of experience including at least 2 years as a Combination Inspector III.
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional coursework in construction technology or related field preferred.
- Valid California driver's license.
- Knowledge of California Building Codes, zoning regulations, and safety standards.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction documents.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Role Responsibilities
Perform on-site inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings for compliance with building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and energy codes.
- Review construction plans and specifications for code compliance.
- Issue permits, notices of violation, and stop-work orders as necessary.
- Provide technical assistance and code interpretation to contractors, architects, engineers, and the public.
- Investigate complaints regarding building code violations and unsafe structures.
- Maintain accurate inspection records and reports.
- Coordinate with other city departments and agencies on code enforcement matters.
- Participate in training and professional development to stay current with code changes.
- Testify at hearings and legal proceedings as needed.
- Mentor junior inspectors and assist with training programs.
Conditions & Requirements
Must be a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the United States.
- Must pass a background check and pre-employment drug screening.
- Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
- Must be able to work in various weather conditions and manage construction sites.
- Must be available for occasional overtime and emergency call-outs.
