Carman Trainee (Alaska Railroad)

This entry-level trainee position requires no prior journeyman experience. Candidates must be willing to complete a combination of self-study correspondence courses and on-the-job practical instruction under qualified Journeyman Carmen.

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Mechanical aptitude and interest in railroad maintenance.

Participate in a structured training program combining self-study and practical instruction.

• Learn inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, servicing, and repair of freight and passenger cars.
• Use tools and equipment properly under supervision.
• Assemble parts and identify tools and equipment.
• Read blueprints, sketches, and technical manuals to understand part functions.
• Plan and lay out work assignments.
• Perform work in accordance with AAR, APTA, FRA, OSHA, and Alaska Railroad regulations.
• Progress toward Journeyman Carmen status through phased training.

Must be able to pass a background check and drug screening.

• Must comply with Federal Railroad Administration regulations.
• Must be able to work in a maintenance shop environment.
• Must be able to lift and carry heavy equipment and parts.
• Must be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Valid driver's license may be required.

Competitive hourly wage of $36.85 per hour.
