NAVFAC ENGINEERING CMD MID-ATLANTIC is hiring a Carpenter to join the Public Works Directorate at Naval Base Newport, RI.

In this role, you will construct and repair a wide variety of structural items such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, and interior and exterior trim.

You will also produce finished products with precise fits and accurate dimensions, mill heavy lumber, cut bevels, rabbets, chamfers, grooves, and compound miter joints, and apply plastic laminates to wood surfaces.

Qualification

To qualify for this WG-9 Carpenter position, you must demonstrate through experience and training the ability to perform carpentry work without more than normal supervision. The screen-out element requires constructing and repairing wood structures, interpreting blueprints, and operating power and hand tools. No specific length of experience is required, but quality of experience is key.

Role Responsibilities

Construct and repair wood and wood substitute structures requiring close fit and structural soundness.

  • Mill heavy lumber, cut bevels, rabbets, chamfers, grooves, and compound miter joints.
  • Apply plastic laminates to wood surfaces such as counter tops and desk tops.
  • Interpret drawings, blueprints, and specifications independently.
  • Repair metal office furniture including desks, chairs, and filing cabinets.
  • Work with hardwoods, softwoods, plywood, veneers, and gluing agents.
  • Install door and window sashes and apply caulking and filler materials.
  • Disassemble, replace, or remove worn items such as rollers, latches, hinges, and damaged tabletops.
  • Construct and repair building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, and trim.
  • Operate power and hand tools including portable drills, saws, sanders, routers, and table saws.
