The County of Orange Public Defender's Office is hiring Deputy Public Defender Attorneys at levels I, II, and III to provide legal representation to indigent clients in criminal proceedings.

Qualification

- For Attorney III: at least two years of experience as a Deputy Public Defender Attorney II or equivalent criminal defense experience.
- Bilingual fluency in Spanish, Vietnamese, or Korean (in addition to English) is desirable and qualifies for bilingual pay upon passing a certification exam.
- Ability to pass a background investigation and maintain confidentiality.
- Valid California driver's license or ability to arrange transportation.
- Knowledge of criminal law, evidence, and court procedures.
- Strong oral and written advocacy skills.
Role Responsibilities
Provide legal representation to indigent clients charged with criminal offenses.
- Conduct client interviews, legal research, and case preparation.
- Draft and file motions, briefs, and other legal documents.
- Negotiate plea agreements with prosecutors.
- Represent clients at arraignments, pretrial hearings, trials, and sentencing.
- Advise clients on their legal rights and case options.
- Collaborate with investigators, social workers, and other defense team members.
- Maintain accurate case files and documentation.
- Appear in court as required and argue motions.
- Stay current on changes in criminal law and procedure.
