Qualification

To qualify at the GS-5 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4, or four years of education above high school, or a combination. Specialized experience includes debt identification and collection support, such as using automated systems to track accounts and communicate with debtors. You must also type at least 40 words per minute.

  • One full year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04 level, defined as providing routine debt identification and collection support.
  • Experience using automated systems to initiate documents for debt collection actions and track debtor accounts.
  • Experience communicating with debtors to present options for debt payments.
  • Experience producing written documents using office software with proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.
  • OR four years of education above high school from an accredited business, secretarial, technical school, junior college, college, or university.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying.
  • Must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors (typing test may be required).
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • Time-in-Grade requirements must be met within 30 days after the closing date for current federal employees.
Role Responsibilities

Obtain and analyze financial information on debtors to determine their present and future ability to pay.

  • Initiate contact with debtors concerning payment obligations and negotiate written payment schedules.
  • Conduct skip-tracing activity to locate debtors using discretion in determining techniques and follow-up.
  • Review and reconcile computerized debt collection printouts with office collection records.
  • Make determinations on appropriateness and cost-effectiveness of pursuing obligations by suit or post-judgment proceedings.
  • Interpret and enforce judgments in criminal cases, independently performing all functions to collect amounts imposed.
  • Communicate with debtors to present options for debt payments.
  • Produce a variety of written documents and materials using office software applications.

You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

  • Initial appointment conditioned upon satisfactory pre-employment adjudication including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing.
  • Continued employment subject to favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • May be required to complete a one-year probationary period or a 2-year trial period.
  • Must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements within 30 days after the closing date.
  • Payment of relocation expenses will not be authorized.
