The North Slope Borough is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic - Rotational to service, diagnose, and repair light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment across the Barrow area.
This role is critical for maintaining the borough's fleet, ensuring equipment reliability for public works and community services. You will perform minor and major repairs, including overhauling engines, drive trains, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
This position may also supervise apprentice workers engaged in vehicle and equipment repair work.
Qualification
Applicants must have experience in heavy equipment repair, including diagnostics and overhaul of engines, drive trains, hydraulics, and electrical systems. This position requires a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one, as it becomes subject to federally mandated testing upon obtaining a CDL.
- Experience in diagnosing and repairing light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment.
- Ability to perform minor and major repairs, including overhauling engines, drive trains, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
- Experience with preventive maintenance and daily inspections of equipment.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain one.
- Willingness to comply with federally mandated testing (pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty, and follow-up) upon obtaining a CDL.
- Supervisory experience preferred, as the position may oversee apprentice workers.
- Ability to work in a rotational capacity, traveling to various locations in the Barrow area.
- Knowledge of safety procedures and equipment startup inspections.
Role Responsibilities

- Conduct daily inspections, fueling, check fluid levels, lighting, tires, and startup and safety inspections.
- Schedule and perform routine preventive maintenance.
- Supervise apprentice workers engaged in vehicle and equipment repair work.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance performed.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and federal testing requirements.
- Operate equipment as needed for diagnostic or repair purposes.
Conditions & Requirements

This position is full-time and located in Barrow (Roving), AK.
- The salary is $45.25 per hour.
