The Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia is hiring a Lead Medical Support Assistant (LMSA) for the Specialty Care service line.
This GS-7 full-time permanent position coordinates the work of Medical Support Assistants, manages daily workload assignments, ensures proper staffing coverage, and oversees clinical flow processes across multiple clinics and specialties.
The LMSA acts as a liaison among staff, patients, and interdisciplinary teams to resolve day-to-day conflicts and maintain efficient operations.
Qualification
To qualify for this GS-7 Lead Medical Support Assistant position, you must meet the basic requirements and grade determination. Basic requirements include U.S. Citizenship and English proficiency. Grade determination requires one year of experience equivalent to GS-6 performing lead duties at least 25% of the time.
- U.S. citizenship required; non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited per VA policy.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- One year of experience equivalent to GS-6 grade level performing lead MSA duties.
- At least 25% of time must be spent on lead duties such as making work assignments, monitoring workflow, providing input on performance, and resolving daily workplace issues.
- Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and clinical flow processes related to access to care across multiple clinics, specialties, and/or community resources.
- Skill in communicating with individuals to obtain desired effect and coordinating with interdisciplinary care team staff.
- Ability to use numerous advanced patient systems in support of multiple clinics in an interdisciplinary setting.
- Ability to organize work, set priorities, and delegate tasks/responsibilities to meet deadlines.
- Ability to provide staff development and training.
- Ability to manage staffing requirements, workflow priorities, and adjust flow of work to meet team and patient needs, including follow-up on pending issues.
Role Responsibilities
Coordinate Advanced MSA assignments and workflow in an interdisciplinary unit.
- Perform daily workload assessments, assign work, and ensure proper staffing coverage.
- Evaluate training records and determine training needs of MSAs to support provider needs across interdisciplinary settings.
- Assist with complex and non-standard procedures, including clinical flow processes related to access to care across multiple clinics, specialties, and community resources.
- Ensure accurate and timely scheduling of appointments.
- Provide guidance to staff members on changes in policies and procedures.
- Create and maintain employee work schedules.
- Act as liaison among Advanced MSA staff, patients, and other interdisciplinary staff to resolve day-to-day conflicts.
- Answer questions for lower-graded staff regarding health care services in inpatient or outpatient settings.
- Monitor and make work assignments, provide input on performance, resolve daily workplace issues, and maintain efficient workflow.
