Qualification

To qualify for the Legal Administrative Assistant II position, candidates must meet specific experience and education requirements as outlined by the City of San Diego. The following qualifications are required for consideration.

  • Two years of full-time experience as a Legal Administrative Assistant I with the City of San Diego.
  • OR one year of full-time experience as a Legal Administrative Assistant I with the City of San Diego AND one year of full-time experience performing legal secretarial or legal administrative support duties.
  • OR three years of full-time experience performing legal secretarial or legal administrative support duties.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license may be required at the time of appointment.
  • Candidates must be able to type at a minimum net corrected speed of 40 words per minute (may be required to pass a typing test).
  • Knowledge of legal terminology, court rules, and procedures is essential.
  • Experience with legal document preparation and case file management is required.
  • Ability to prioritize and schedule events in accordance with court and city rules.
Role Responsibilities

Prepare and process a wide variety of legal documents including summons, complaints, answers to complaints, points and authorities, discovery requests and responses, briefs, writs, motions, orders, subpoenas, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, agreements, legal opinions, memoranda, and reports to City Council, boards, and committees.

  • Prepare more complex legal documents and verify legal references.
  • Schedule and prioritize a wide variety of events in accordance with specific rules and procedures mandated by the courts, City Clerk’s Office, and City Attorney’s Office.
  • Compose and type legal documents.
  • Prepare case settlements.
  • Schedule and arrange depositions.
  • Establish and maintain case files, records, and indexes.
  • Document reference and background information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Conditions & Requirements

Must be able to work full-time (40 hours per week) in San Diego, CA.

  • May be required to pass a background check and/or drug screening.
  • Must comply with all City of San Diego policies and procedures.
  • May be required to work overtime as needed.
  • Must maintain confidentiality of sensitive legal information.
Benefits

Salary range of $84,843 to $102,606 per year.
