Licensed Practical Nurse (Medical Sub Specialty)

To qualify, you must be a U.S. Citizen and meet education and licensure requirements. The position is open to the public, including U.S. Citizens and nationals. • United States Citizenship required; non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited.
• Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time of program completion.
• Full, active, current, and unrestricted licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
• GS-3: No experience beyond basic requirements.
• GS-4: Six months of qualifying LPN experience; OR graduation from an approved school and one year of nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or similar facility; OR graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration.
• GS-5: One year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent, plus demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide full range of practical nursing care, orient/train less experienced staff, and provide patient/family education.
• GS-6: One year of additional qualifying experience at the GS-5 level, with technical proficiency in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties, and ability to observe, identify, and respond to patient needs.
• Preferred Experience: 2 years practice as an LPN, 2 years outpatient experience, and care management experience.
• Physical Standards: Must meet the physical standards outlined in VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

Apply knowledge of nursing principles, practices, and procedures specific to the designated patient population.

• Provide patient/family education in an individualized manner to facilitate understanding of discharge or continuing care needs.
• Use equipment, supplies, and materials to deliver care as outlined in unit-specific competency records.
• Recognize deviations from normal and respond effectively in urgent or emergent situations.
• Document all clinical interactions, including visits, phone calls, and secure messaging.
• Assist with or complete minor procedures, including obtaining and arranging necessary equipment, positioning patients, ensuring comfort and privacy, obtaining and labeling laboratory specimens, and preparing clinical rooms.
• Initiate, perform, and complete assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations.
• Prepare and administer prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and/or intravenous) as permitted by facility policy.
• Work collaboratively with RNs, physicians, and other team members to provide efficient, high-quality care.
• Orient and train less experienced LPNs, Nursing Assistants, or Health Technicians as needed.
