Job Description
The Norfolk Naval Shipyard is hiring a Machinist Inspector for the Quality Assurance Division at the Naval Foundry and Propeller Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In this role, you will inspect surface ship and submarine propulsion components, conduct surveillance inspections of final component operational tests, and perform in-process, receipt, and certification inspections. You will make on-the-spot acceptance or rejection decisions and defend those decisions in writing.
This position is ideal for experienced machinists with strong inspection skills who want to apply their expertise in a federal shipyard environment supporting the U.S.
Qualification
To qualify for the Machinist Inspector (WG 13) position, you must demonstrate through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties. The screen-out element is the ability to inspect. Applicants who do not receive at least two points on the screen-out element will be found ineligible.
- Must show through experience and training possession of the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the WG 13 level.
- Screen-out element: Ability to Inspect. Minimum of two points required on this element.
- Qualification requirements emphasize quality of experience, not necessarily length of time.
- Must meet the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualification Handbook for Trades and Labor Occupations.
- Experience can include paid and unpaid work, including volunteer service through National Service programs.
- No education requirement for this position.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
- Must participate in direct deposit pay program.
- Must pass a pre-appointment physical examination.
Role Responsibilities
Receive specific and general assignments for inspection of surface ship and submarine propulsion components.
- Conduct surveillance inspections of final component operational tests to verify test procedures and instrumentation are current and calibrated.
- Perform Surveillance Inspections, In-Process Inspection, Receipt Inspection, and Certification Inspection.
- Make on-the-spot controversial acceptance and rejection decisions and defend actions orally and in writing.
- Determine and assemble pertinent information and materials for planning, scheduling, inspection, and reporting.
- Work in areas with potentially harmful physical and chemical agents (fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals).
- Work onboard ships, climb ladders and scaffolding, and work in small/confined spaces.
- May require travel CONUS and OCONUS, including remote or isolated sites, and travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods.
