Job Description

The Department of the Navy is hiring a Marine Machinery Mechanic Leader (WL-10) to supervise and perform skilled work on marine machinery at naval shipyards and facilities.

This role is based in San Diego, CA, with additional locations including Pearl Harbor, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

As a leader, you will apply advanced techniques to install, align, overhaul, repair, and maintain many marine machinery, equipment, and systems.

You will use precision measuring devices such as alignment scopes, micrometers, and vibration analyzers, and operate machine tools like lathes and milling machines to manufacture or remachine parts.

The work involves disassembling and rebuilding components such as shafts, propellers, rudders, engines, and sea valves, as well as operating machinery for launching and arresting gear, missile handling systems, torpedo tubes, periscopes, antennas, sonar, and radar.

You will interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and shop directives to determine critical dimensions and reference points.

Estimated market salary: $95,000 - $175,000 per year.

Qualification

To qualify for the Marine Machinery Mechanic Leader (WL-10) position, you must demonstrate through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties. The screen-out element for this job is ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE. Applicants who do not receive at least two points on this element will be found ineligible.

  • Ability to lead or supervise (screen-out element).
  • Experience in marine machinery repair, including disassembly, overhaul, and alignment of components such as shafts, propellers, rudders, engines, and sea valves.
  • Skill in using precision measuring devices: alignment scopes, verniers, micrometers, precision levels, transits, strobe tachometers, bearing bridge gauges, flow meters, hydrostatic testers, and vibration analyzers.
  • Ability to set up and operate machine tools (lathes, milling machines, drill presses, precision grinders) to manufacture or remachine parts.
  • Knowledge of standard formulas, shop mathematics, trade theories, and industry practices for calculating materials and solving problems.
  • Experience interpreting technical manuals, multiview blueprints, and shop directives.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment and participate in direct deposit.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • May require pre-appointment physical examination, security clearance, and drug testing.
Role Responsibilities

Lead a crew of marine machinery mechanics in installing, aligning, overhauling, repairing, and maintaining marine machinery and systems.

  • Apply a variety of methods, procedures, and techniques to layout, install, align, overhaul, repair, and maintain numerous types of marine machinery, equipment, and systems.
  • Use test equipment and measuring devices such as alignment scopes, verniers, micrometers, precision levels, transits, strobe tachometers, bearing bridge gauges, flow meters, hydrostatic testers, and vibration analyzers.
  • Set up and operate machine tools such as small lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and precision grinders to manufacture component parts or remachine existing parts.
  • Disassemble, repair, and rebuild components and assemblies such as shafts, propellers, rudders, engines, and sea valves.
  • Operate machinery and equipment for launching and arresting gear systems, missile handling and launch systems, torpedo tubes, periscopes, antennas, sonar, and radar equipment.
  • Interpret and apply requirements from technical manuals, shop directives, multiview blueprints, and other documents to determine critical dimensions and key reference points.
  • Perform onsite milling, grinding, boring, facing, and drilling using portable machine tools.
