Job Description
County of Santa Clara is hiring a Medical Assistant to perform specialized and routine clinical tasks in ambulatory care settings throughout Santa Clara County.
Under the clinical supervision of a Registered Nurse or licensed Physician/Podiatrist, you will prepare patients for examinations, obtain vital signs, verify referral information, and take detailed histories.
You will also maintain examination rooms and nurses stations, order supplies, transport specimens, wash and package instruments, and keep emergency trays updated.
Qualification
Applicants must meet the employment standards for Medical Assistant as defined by the County of Santa Clara. Qualified candidates will be invited to an online examination tentatively scheduled for the week of August 17, 2026.
- Completion of a recognized Medical Assistant training program or equivalent experience.
- Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, vital signs measurement, and patient preparation procedures.
- Ability to maintain examination rooms, stock supplies, and handle specimen transport.
- Experience with electronic health records and medical record control.
- Strong communication skills for patient instruction and interaction with clinical staff.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced ambulatory care environment.
- Valid CPR certification (BLS) required.
Role Responsibilities
Prepare patients for examination by draping, obtaining vital signs, verifying referral information, and taking detailed history.
- Maintain examination rooms and nurses stations, including ordering supplies, transporting specimens, washing and packaging instruments, and changing solutions.
- Keep Emergency Tray updated and supplies stocked in proper locations.
- Instruct patients in simple procedures/tests, hygiene, exercise, diet, and other basic instructions given by the physician.
- Dispense appropriate educational materials so patients understand procedures/diagnoses.
- Complete charge sheets and ensure they are given to the appropriate clerk for processing.
- Maintain medical record control and ensure records are reviewed and returned to proper filing.
- Assist with minor procedures as directed by the physician or nurse.
Conditions & Requirements
Must be able to pass a background check and drug screening.
- Valid California driver's license may be required for travel between clinic sites.
- Ability to stand, walk, and lift up to 25 pounds regularly.
- Must comply with HIPAA and patient confidentiality regulations.
- Availability to work full-time schedule, including possible evenings or weekends.
