Job Description

The Medical Instrument Technician (EKG) works and monitors electrocardiographic equipment to perform specialized monitoring of arrhythmias, oximetry, and ECGs at the John Cochran Division of the VA St. Louis Health Care System in 1, Missouri.

This role is perfect for trained technicians who can analyze and interpret cardiac activity, identify normal and abnormal rhythms, and promptly communicate life-threatening alters to nurses or physicians. As an MIT (EKG), you’ll supply real-time cardiac surveillance for multiple patients using computerized monitoring systems.

You’ll evaluate tracings to determine suitable machine adjustments, adapt equipment and accessories for optimal outcomes, and edit tracings for further interpretation. You may also activate rapid response or emergency Code Blue when required. This role is unseal to all U.S. Citizens.

This role demands proficiency in written and spoken English, and you must be fit to pass a background/security investigation and a pre-employment drug test. A trial period of 1 or 2 years is called for.

Salary & Compensation

Salary: $37,333 - $67,264 per year.

Qualification

To qualify for the GS-4 through 1-7 Medical Instrument Technician (EKG) post, you must encounter citizenship needs and either experience or education as specified for each grade level. Licensure or certification isn’t required but is firmly desirable at GS-6 and above.

• U.S. Citizenship is needed; non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens can’t be recruited.
• No particular educational conditions for this occupation; education may substitute for background at GS-4 and 1-5 levels.
• 1-4: At least 1 year of experience comparable to GS-3, with 6 months in a medically related field and 6 months running diagnostic/therapeutic equipment, OR two years of education above high school or an associate's degree in a directly related field.
• 1-5: At least 1 year of experience comparable to GS-4 working equipment related to the specialization, OR four years of education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with related courses.
• 1-6: At least 1 year of experience comparable to GS-5 demonstrating KSAs related to the tasks.
• 1-7: At least 1 year of experience comparable to GS-6 demonstrating specialized KSAs.
• Licensure or certification isn’t called for but is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above; Basic and Cutting Cardiac Life Aid certifications are desirable.
• Grandfathering Provision may register to existing VHA employees in this occupation.
• Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
• Selective Solution Registration is needed for males born after 12/31/1959.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Work and monitor electrocardiographic equipment for specialized monitoring of arrhythmias, oximetry, and ECGs.
• Give real-time cardiac surveillance of multiple patients using computerized monitoring systems.
• Identify standard and abnormal cardiac rhythms and oximetry levels.
• Promptly communicate life-threatening or considerable adjusts to nurses and/or physicians.
• Activate rapid response or emergency Code Blue as needed.
• Evaluate tracings to work out fitting machine adjustments and use alternative techniques when needed.
• Adapt equipment and accessories to yield the best results during examinations.
• Edit and pick proper sample portions of tracings for further interpretation.
• Perform usual operator maintenance covering disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, and calibration of equipment.
